Changing the Face of Legal Practice: "Unbundled" Legal Services

Maryland Legal Assistance Network - 020074

Abstract Number: 020074

October 2002

The target audience for this national website includes the public interest bar, legal services, courts, mediators and bar associations working on or interested in "unbundled" legal services. The site contains living documents and ideas gathered from practitioners at the forefront of a newly recognized area of legal expertise, sometimes called "unbundled" legal services or discrete task representation. The term "unbundled legal services" refers to a broad range of discrete tasks that an attorney might undertake such as advice, negotiation, document review, document preparation, and limited representation.

The website provides a forum for a continuing national conversation on the changing practice of law - unbundled legal services in particular. The site was initially created to support, and then to report on, a national conference - "The Changing Face of Legal Practice: "Unbundled Legal Services"' held in October of 2000. The site contains about 60% of the documents, ideas and recommendations produced for the conference, which was the first national interdisciplinary conference on the topic. In addition the site has been maintained on an ad hoc basis as a resource and includes:

  • presenter contacts and citations to papers and other materials not posted on the site,
  • national and state updates on rule changes and task force recommendations as well as
  • unbundled panel program profiles and materials.

The initial conference was convened by the Maryland Legal Assistance Network/MLSC and was co-sponsored by the National Legal Aid and Defenders Association (NLADA), the ABA Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services, the ABA Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants (SCLAID), the American Judicature Society, the AARP Foundation Legal Advocacy Group, the Legal Services Corporation (LSC), the National Association of IOLTA Programs (NAIP), the Maryland State Bar Association, the university of Baltimore Law School and the university of Maryland School of Law. The site is maintained by the MLAN project.

The web address is www.unbundledlaw.org State and local updates and relevant materials are welcome and encouraged.
