Legal Aid University (LAU) Online provides legal aid attorneys with professional development courses over the Web. A venture overseen and developed by some of the community's foremost leaders, LAU strengthens legal aid attorneys' effectiveness as advocates for justice through its interactive online seminars and other web-based resources. By centralizing the development of courses and teaching them through the Web, LAU makes high-quality, low-cost training programs feasible for organizations that would otherwise be unable to provide any formal training to their staff.
LAU was founded in January 2003 when the Legal Services Training Consortium of New England received a three-year national Technology Innovation Grant that was awarded to Legal Services Law Line of Vermont by the Legal Services Corporation. The vision of this grant was that by modifying its training programs for an online environment, the Consortium would be able to leverage its history of innovation and success in training design and delivery to the entire country, particularly remote regions where in-person trainings are financially unfeasible.
