Closing the Digital Divide

Neighborhood Legal Services Program - 030103

Abstract Number: 030103

January 2004

The Neighborhood Legal Services Program (NLSP) Board resolved to close the digital divide between its attorney directors and lay directors by providing computers, internet access and training to its client-eligible lay directors. The resolution will enable simultaneous communication between NLSP's Executive Director and the entire board as well as email communication among members of the board, staff and community-based organizations. It will also permit Board Committees to share information and conduct their work much more efficiently.

NLSP has received powerful anecdotal testimony from its lay board members as to the sense of empowerment they now experience at being able to communicate with the program via email. At present, NLSP is the only program in the country with a client member on a ProBonoNet website development stakeholder committee. This would not be possible without NLSP's digital divide project.
