Videoconferencing Project

Legal Aid Society of Hawaii - 020105

Abstract Number: 020105

December 2002

Legal Aid Society of Hawaii (LASH) developed a videoconferencing project to enable LASH to expand service delivery between islands as well as facilitate internal office meetings and trainings. LASH implemented video-conferencing in all of its nine offices. Due to the unique challenges posed by Hawaii's geography, videoconferencing equipment is particularly useful and appropriate especially considering that flying is typically the only means to travel between the islands. In the near future, LASH plans to increase the videoconferencing component from eight sites to 14 sites which will entail installing videoconferencing equipment in each of LASH's social services partner's sites.

To date, LASH has run several successful pro se divorce clinics remotely using video-conferencing. LASH also hosted several large trainings that included statewide safety training and a presentation from the Department of Health and Human Services. LASH is currently expanding this type of utilization to include eviction, bankruptcy and cross trainings with their social services partners.

Technically, LASH implemented a mix of T1, Frame Relay and DSL circuits. These circuits are being provided by two carriers statewide. In the Honolulu office LASH has a large conference room for larger groups and clinics and an additional intake room specifically for brief services, intake and client consultations. LASH's client surveys indicate a promising level comfort using this technology.
