Student Assisted Legal Research

Legal Aid East Tennessee - 050004

Abstract Number: 050004

April 2005

Legal Aid of East Tennessee developed the Student Assisted Legal Research project to serve as an interactive, secure area on the web which would allow staff to post research needs for student assistance. The website would allow law student coordinators to match requests with pro bono law students. Once a student has been assigned a research project, the communication and transfer of materials would commence. The College of Law Faculty Advisor would then oversee and supervise the data as it is being transferred directly to and from staff via this secure website.

The project was initially intended to rely heavily on the Open Source Template used by several states for their statewide websites. However, it was decided that the project would utilize another Open Source tool called Plone that did not require the use of the template. This gives those states and organizations that use the ProBonoNet solution for their statewide website, the opportunity to incorporate this tool. Additionally, it also gives an organization that may have no current web presence, the ability to utilize this tool through a hosting arrangement with Kaivo or another Open Source provider.
