Legal Aid of Orange County Interactive Community Assistance Network - 020009

Abstract Number: 020009

June 2002

Legal Aid Society of Orange County partnered with the Superior Court of California and Orange County to develop the Interactive Community Assistance Network (I-CAN!) in November 2000. I-CAN! Is a kiosk and web-based program that provides legal assistance to self-represented litigants in preparing legal pleadings. This LSC-funded program provides a computer system designed to broaden the reach of legal services and give pro se clients the tools they need to represent their own interests in court.

I-CAN! Modules create properly formatted pleadings; provide court tours; and educate users on the law and steps needed to pursue their matter. The modules were designed for individuals with little knowledge of computers. A "video guide" takes the users through a series of tutorial-type questions. Answers are chosen by touching a computer screen and are then "mapped" to the appropriate judicial forms. I-CAN! Also supports multiple languages. Many modules have been translated into Spanish and some into Vietnamese.

I-CAN! Can be customized for use outside the Orange County area.
