Legal Aid Society of Orange County (LASOC) created the I-CAN! E-File module to provide a simple way for low-income workers to electronically file their taxes and claim their Earned Income Tax Credot refund. This web-based tax filing system assists low-income tax filers in completing the mandatory tax forms to receive an EITC refund and complete their federal taxes. Alabama, California, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania and Tennessee state returns may also be completed. The I-CAN! E-File was originally made available in spring 2003 on computers stationed in government and community centers throughout 28 organizations in 10 states, as well as online at: http://www.icanefile.com.org/. Now it is available nationwide with no income cap. Users navigate the program by answering questions in either English or Spanish at fifth grade literacy levels. Users respond to the questions with a keyboard and do so at their own pace. Upon completion, the tax forms can be printed, and in some locations, filed electronically. The federal EITC can return as much as $4,824 a year to a low-income working family. The I-CAN! E-File module is also available for use by other legal services providers by registering on the I-CAN! E-File website. This project is funded by the Internal Revenue Service and the Legal Services Corporation. For more information, visit the I-CAN! EIC project website at: http://www.icanefile.org/ and LASOC's website at: http://www.legal-aid.com/.
