Oregon's Legal Aid Open Houses
Oregon - 020032
Abstract Number: 020032
July 2002
On October 23, 2002, legal aid programs in Oregon are hosting their third series of statewide Open Houses. Held every other year, preceding the state legislative season, the purpose of the open houses is to educate bar leaders, judges, social services providers, public officials, foundations, legislators, and the business community about the role of the legal aid program in their community. VIP speakers at each locale highlight significant work in that community and the importance of access to justice. The open houses are sponsored by the Oregon State Bar, Oregon's legal services programs, and the Campaign for Equal Justice, which raises funds for the state's legal aid programs. Extensive press coverage of the events two years ago highlighted the findings of the 2000 Oregon Legal Needs study. More than 600 people attended events in 16 legal aid offices. This year's open houses will pay special recognition to the private attorneys who provide hundreds of hours of pro bono services on behalf of the programs' clients. Oregon's legal services programs, the Bar, and the Campaign for Equal Justice plan to continue this effort in the future in order to encourage community partnerships, augment pro bono efforts, and expand fundraising sources.
