Neighborhood Legal Services Association operates a pro se custody clinic in two of its rural counties in Pennsylvania.
Up to 12 clients are scheduled twice each month in each county. NLSA staff present a summary of custody law and procedure to the group, and then provide individual advice and instruction on whether to file a pleading, on how to fill it out, and how to file it. At NLSA's urging, the Court of Common Pleas in each county approved simplified custody pleadings and trained court personnel to guide pro se litigants through the necessary steps for filing the pleading, obtaining a hearing date, and serving the pleading. Clients who want representation at the custody hearing are referred to a private attorney for reduced fee representation.
