Legal Aid of East Tennessee and National Technology Assistance Project - 070060
Abstract Number: 070060
July 2007
In 2005, Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) completed development of a research tool to help legal aid programs utilize law school students to conduct needed legal research on behalf of legal aid clients. The tool was initially developed through a partnership between LAET and the University of Tennessee Law School. It enables legal aid lawyers to request legal research to be completed by law students via a secure website. After the students complete the research, documents are reviewed by faculty for approval or continued research. Once faculty members accept the research completed by the students, the research is uploaded to a secure server to be downloaded later and saved into the LAET database for future use. LAET has also recently partnered with National Technology Assistance Project (NTAP) to develop and pilot a national-rollout plan, which will be the basis of adoption of the tool across the country in subsequent years.
