Small Claims Resource Center Pilot Project

D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program - 070039

Abstract Number: 070039

June 2007

The D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program launched a Small Claims Resource Center Pilot Project to offer pro se litigants legal information.   The Pro Bono Program recruited Neighborhood Legal Services Program, Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law and George Washington University Law School to staff the Small Claims Resource Center during the initial pilot phase with lawyers and law students who provide legal information and assistance to pro se litigants in small claims matters in the District of Columbia.  The Resource Center's lawyers and law students advise pro se litigants on how to present their cases in court, assist litigants with preparing pro se pleadings and help pro se litigants understand small claims proceedings.  The Resource Center's lawyers and law students also educate pro se litigants about how to obtain continuances and retain counsel and make referrals to legal service providers in appropriate cases.  Pro se pleadings and self-help materials are being developed to supplement the services provided by the Resource Center.
