Public Interest Fellowship

University of Baltimore School of Law, Maryland Legal Aid Bureau and the Maryland Office of the Public Defender - 070045

Abstract Number: 070045

June 2007

The University of Baltimore (UB) School of Law partnered with Maryland Legal Aid Bureau and the Maryland Office of the Public Defender to develop the UB Public Interest Fellowship for law students.  The program is modeled after the Equal Justice Scholarships sponsored by the University of Texas School of Law and Baylor University Law School in Waco.  This fellowship pays for the third year of law school and arranges a full-time public interest job after graduation.  The fellowship forgives a year of law school tuition for a commitment to work in public service for a number of years.   Legal Aid Bureau and the Maryland Office of the Public Defender will each choose a second-year student as a fellow, hire the students as summer interns and then, after graduation, place the new lawyers in staff positions for a minimum of three years.
