The Rhode Island Legal Services (RILS) Low Income Taxpayer Clinic provides free legal assistance on federal tax matters.  RILS Low Income Taxpayer Clinic serves low-income taxpayers who have disputes with IRS and helps taxpayers who speak English as a second language.  The Clinic evaluates each taxpayer's situation individually and accepts cases based on factors such as current income and the income reported on the return, domestic violence, physical or mental disability, number of family members and nature and complexity of the tax issue. 

The Clinic assists taxpayers with matters such as:

• Innocent Spouse Relief Requests
• Injured Spouse Claims
• Audits or Examinations
• Earned Income Tax Credit
• Deficiency Notices/Tax Court
• Liens and Levies
• Negotiations and/or Settlements
• Self Employment
• Earned Income Tax Refund Eligibility
