The Montana Legal Services Association (MLSA) and the 2nd Judicial District Pro Bono Program in Butte Montana have been working together for over fifteen years. In the beginning of this partnership private attorneys took referrals from MLSA and represented the referred clients on a pro bono basis. When this group of volunteers recognized the need for free legal representation was too great for them to handle alone, they approached the District Judges to request the court administer a pro bono program in Butte. MLSA refers qualified cases to the court, which assigns the cases to attorneys on a rotating basis. The court provides the day-to-day administration of the program. The local bar association, through its attorney-staffed pro bono committee, conducts low-cost CLE programs to prepare Butte pro bono attorneys to represent clients in a variety of family law cases
