Bay Area Legal Services - 070095

Abstract Number: 070095

September 2007

Bay Area Legal Services' the Judge Don Castor Community Law Center provides transactional legal assistance to local nonprofit organizations that serve low-income/low-wealth residents and distressed communities. The Community Law Center acts as a centralized link between needy groups and capable volunteer attorneys who want to give back to their communities. In addition to advice and direct legal services to clients, the Community Law Center also coordinates training events to assist non-profit clients and potential clients with recurring issues that arise in their daily operations. During its years of operation, the Community Law Center has had a positive impact with community-based housing initiatives and has assisted domestic violence victims in their efforts to gain transitional housing. The Center also assists community groups seeking charitable nonprofit status and non-profits with tax matters, organizational issues, risk management concerns, real property and zoning issues, labor management issues, regulatory concerns and intellectual property. In 2006, the Center helped over 110 groups and organizations and placed more than 49 cases with volunteer attorneys who provided pro bono services to organizations that could not otherwise afford the assistance.  For more information or to apply for services online, go to www.bals.org.  The application is available under nonprofit assistanc
