Legal Services of Northern California (LSNC) has operated a Senior Legal Hotline (SLH) regionally since 1994 and statewide from 2004. The hotline employs a small staff of attorneys, paralegals and support personnel, the numbers fluctuating with resources. They are supplemented by dozens of volunteers – attorneys, law students, mediators and interpreters, among others. Clients over 60 can call the hotline for help or submit their questions by e-mail. SLH handled about 20,000 cases a year in 2005 and 2006. It handles any legal issue and responds to pressing needs when possible with special projects. Among current ones are multilingual capacity building, development of an adjunct phone mediation service, housing counseling and special service to grandparent caregivers of minors, employing a social work student intern. SLH also coordinates its work with the state's network of local providers of legal help for seniors. For 18 counties, including SLH's home base in Sacramento, these contracts are held by various LSNC offices.
