The Texas RioGrande Legal Aid Mental Health Outreach team serves clients who encounter legal problems as a result of a mental disability. Team members coordinate a variety of efforts to meet clients' needs, recognizing the importance of internal sensitivity training within the workplace in addition to a crucial, external campaign working with local mental health providers to support innovative initiatives in the community. Team objectives call for the training of staff to better recognize the presence of a mental disability and its effects on a client's legal problems. Team members also forge collaborative efforts with other related agencies to make efficient use of the state's mental health resources and design new service protocols. This approach – a dialogue that allows for a constant, fluid exchange of information and referral services – allows clients the opportunity to receive not only effective legal services, but vital social and treatment services as well.
