Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee created the Tax Advocacy Counseling Service (TACS) project to provide legal assistance to individuals involved in tax controversies. Specifically, the project provides assistance to individuals who filed an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) claim and were audited by either the state or federal Internal Revenue Service. Wisconsin offers a state EITC and, if an individual is audited, it is likely that both an individuals' state and federal tax returns will be involved in the controversy. TACS provides an important service since individuals who claim the EITC are more likely to be audited and less likely to have the necessary financial resources to navigate the audit. The tax program assists anyone in the State of Wisconsin.
