The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland (LASC) operates the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic using pro bono and staff attorneys. The project started in January 2001 and works in conjunction with the Cleveland Bar Association and private law firms to give free legal advice to people who have tax problems and who cannot afford a private lawyer. LASC has augmented its panel of tax attorneys, and also handles tax cases in-house.
The Clinic helps individuals with controversies about federal income tax matters, including disputes about refunds, credits and collections. The Clinic also provides information about handling marital tax debts and collection alternatives. Representatives of the Clinic do not prepare and file income tax returns, but can refer clients to agencies for this type of assistance.
Although the Internal Revenue Service partially funds the Low Income Tax Clinc, the Clinic is not part of the IRS, the U.S. Tax Court or any other governmental agency.
