Performance Management System

Columbia Legal Services - 030150

Abstract Number: 030150

December 2003

Columbia Legal Services (CLS) has developed a new Performance Management system. A CLS committee comprised of union and management representatives developed the system which is currently being implemented on a trial basis. The goal of the committee was to create performance management tools for attorneys and support staff that would reflect the professional performance standards expected of legal services staff, the values and mission of Columbia Legal Services, and meet the needs of staff members and their supervisors for effective feedback and professional development planning to support the delivery of the highest quality legal services to CLS' clients. At the end of the trial period, the committee will review any feedback and make any changes to the manual. In addition to providing information on CLS' review process, the manual includes a collection of forms that facilitate self-assessment, peer input, and external feedback for both attorney and legal support staff. CLS also developed an evaluation of the performance review process as well. The final section of the manual includes substantive background resources that include the ABA's Standards for Providers of Civil Legal Services for the Poor as well as CLS organizational material and policy documents. To learn more about this manual, access the full manual below as a PDF document.
