Mapping Evaluation

Legal Services Corporation - 030128

Abstract Number: 030128

December 2003

The Legal Services Corporation's Office of Inspector General has completed the first phase of an evaluation to determine the usefulness of mapping in support of legal services strategic and operations planning and activities at the local, state, and national levels. Drawing upon program case data as well as census information, strategic mapping offers a number of benefits to legal services providers including the capacity to visually depict changes in the poverty population as well as the ability to clearly identify income-eligible and underserved populations. This information enables programs to more effectively promote their work and deploy resources to meet unmet legal needs areas. The OIG chose Georgia as a case study for this evaluation primarily because Georgia offers both significant rural and urban service areas and as well as a growing low-income community. For more information on this project, access presentation materials, the Mapping Evaluation Summary (Phase I), and sample legal services maps online at: http://www.oig.lsc.gov/mapping/mapping.htm. The Mapping Evaluation Phase I report is available below as a PDF document.
