AARP Legal Counsel for the Elderly hosted a Legal Rights Fair to inform potential clients about AARP's services. At the fair, prospective clients had the opportunity to visit booths and talk to staff and volunteers to learn about the services available to them. The booths offered a tremendous amount of information ranging from information on pro se litigation to updates on the availability of public benefits. In some cases, participants receive in-depth interviews for more complex legal problems. Legal Rights Fairs can be very informative and useful especially because clients rarely know of the variety of services available to them and fairs such as this provide an ideal forum to educate potential clients about their rights the availability of services. AARP advertised the event by publicizing the following AARP services.
Powers of attorney, & wills
Resolving problems with your landlord
Obtaining affordable prescriptions
Public benefits check-up
Resolving nursing home problems
Information on Senior Services
AARP hosted their first fair in September 2002 and 114 elderly D.C. residents learned about services available to them. In addition, participants received services and information on how to resolve pressing legal issues, all within a three hour period.
