Center for Arkansas Legal Services (CALS) offers a loan repayment assistance program (LRAP) to assist attorneys in repaying educational debt they accrued while attending law school. CALS adopted this LRAP program to help recruit and retain a more diverse staff of attorneys. Participating attorneys are required to pay the first $40 as a deductible and CALS will reimburse them for up to $166.67 per month on top of the deductible payment. If CALS employees receive benefits from another LRAP, CALS assistance will be secondary to outside LRAP. Attorneys must provide CALS with documentation of each monthly loan payment. To be eligible for assistance, attorneys must commit to working with CALS for one year. In the event that a CALS attorney leaves prior to fulfilling their one year commitment, attorneys will be required to repay a portion of the assistance. CALS' assistance is considered income for tax purposes. To learn more about this program, visit CALS LRAP guidelines below.
