August 2007
Equal Justice Works published "Paper Chase to Money Chase: Law School Debt Diverts Road to Public Service" to illustrate the challenges faced by public interest law organizations and government agencies when seeking to recruit and retain attorneys with massive student loans. This report is the culmination of a study exploring how student loans effected employment decisions made by recent law school graduates. This study revealed a number of startling statistics such as 66% of respondents were prevented from seriously considering public interest or government jobs due to their burdensome law school debts. The study also found that loan repayment assistance could significantly increase interest in public interest and government jobs.
