Central Florida Legal Services (CFLS) offers a loan repayment assistance program (LRAP) to full-time staff attorneys. Loan assistance is available on a sliding scale to provide more assistance to younger, lower paid attorneys. Attorneys who make up to $49,999 a year are eligible to receive $400 a month. Attorneys who make $50,000 - $60,000 are eligible to receive up to $300 a month. Once an attorney passes the $60,000 threshold, CFLS will reimburse participating employees up to $150 a month for one year. Participating attorneys must provide CFLS with documentation of their loans and payments prior to receiving reimbursements. All benefits are considered income for tax purposes. If an attorney receives benefits through another LRAP, the assistance is subtracted from the total CFLS would provide (e.g. if an employee earning less than $49,999 receives $300 from another LRAP, they would receive $100 from CFLS).
To receive benefits, attorneys must make an initial two-year commitment to CFLS in addition to an optional year-to-year continuation for two additional years. In the event that an employee leaves CFLS prior to fulfilling the initial two year commitment or the additional year-to-year continuations, employees are required to repay a portion or all of the loan assistance to CFLS according to a formula detailed in the program guidelines. After four years, the employee would not have to repay any benefits received through this program. Access the program guidelines by clicking on the text below.
