Southwest Virginia Legal Aid Society (SVLAS) operates a loan repayment assistance program (LRAP) to help attorneys repay outstanding debt that accumulated while attending law school. Upon being hired, attorneys may receive up to $200 per month in assistance from SVLAS which is provided to the attorney as monthly loans. The loans are included in the attorney's paycheck and taxed as income. The LRAP assistance continues to be considered loans until the attorney has worked for SVLAS for three years. After three years, SVLAS forgives the full amount of the loans provided to the attorney. In the event that an attorney leaves SVLAS prior to meeting the three year commitment, the attorney is required to repay SVLAS the net proceeds received from the program.
