Loan Repayment Assistance Program

Legal Services of Eastern Michigan - 030071

Abstract Number: 030071

April 2003

Originally implemented in 1987, Legal Services of Eastern Michigan (LSEM) offers staff attorneys a loan repayment assistance program (LRAP) to help alleviate burdensome law school educational loans. To be eligible, employees must be a full-time attorney with LSEM who is admitted to the bar. Prior to receiving benefits, attorneys must provide documentation to LSEM detailing their loan debt. LSEM pays of the total student loan payments up to $250 per month directly to the lender. These payments are made for a period of three years. LSEM payments are considered loans to the employees. The loan is forgiven at the same rate it was made ($250 per month) in the three years after the loan payment was issued from LSEM. In the event that attorneys leave prior to working for LSEM for six years, attorneys are required to repay LSEM for the amount not yet forgiven plus 7% annual interest.
