Legal Aid Society of San Diego (LASSD) implemented a loan repayment assistance program (LRAP) to help attorneys repay outstanding educational loans. Full-time attorneys who are members of the California State Bar are eligible to receive benefits. Participating attorneys can receive up to 50% of their minimum loan payment obligation not exceeding $300 per month and they are eligible for as long as they are employed by LASSD. Participating attorneys must provide the executive office with documentation on their outstanding loans. LASSD approaches loan repayment as a form of salary augmentation for attorneys with burdensome loans; therefore LASSD includes the benefits in attorney paycheck and LASSD does not require documentation for how the money was spent. LASSD's LRAP funds are considered income for tax purposes.
