In 1996, Northwest Justice Project created a law school loan repayment assistance program (LRAP) to help alleviate the burden of law school loans on NJP attorneys. NJP full-time staff attorneys are eligible to participate in this program and they currently may receive up to $500 after taxes per calendar quarter to help repay their debt. NJP's loan assistance is recorded on W-2 forms as taxable income. NJP attorneys may receive assistance as long as they are employed with NJP and their salary remains below NJP's attorney 10-11 pay scale. NJP attorneys are encouraged to investigate various loan repayment options and may be required to take advantage of law school LRAPs and use NJP's program to compliment the assistance provided by their law school. NJP has found their LRAP to be an effective recruitment and retention tool that enables them to attract attorneys who otherwise may not be able to afford to work for NJP.
