A Road Map for Building an Equal Justice Community - 020029
Abstract Number: 020029
July 2002
Leaders in Washington State's Equal Justice Community created "A Road Map for Building a Civil Equal Justice Community" with a grant from the Law and Society Program of the Open Society Institute. This handbook is a tool for guiding the development and enhancement of effective and enduring equal justice communities. The authors define an equal justice community as "a group of individuals and organizations united through a common, expressed vision and a shared set of values, who are bound together by a sense of fidelity to the promise of justice and equality, and who are willing to put personal, professional and organizational allegiances aside in pursuit of a common justice ideal." A strong equal justice community will in turn support the most effective delivery of civil equal justice to low-income people. Readers can learn from Washington State's journey and create their own equal justice communities with knowledge gained from their experience.
The handbook is divided into two parts: Part I identifies 11 key steps for developing and augmenting equal justice communities. Part II contains reference materials pertaining to the creation of Washington State's equal justice community. To access this manual as a PDF document, click on the text below.
