Intake Presentation

Legal Services of Greater Miami -  020025

Abstract Number: 020025

July 2002

Legal Services of Greater Miami (LSGMI) created this intake presentation to inform applicants of eligibility requirements and the types of cases LSGMI and other providers in the region handle prior to meeting with intake staff. Upon arrival at the LSGMI office, applicants are provided with an intake screening form, and are informed of the intake presentation and procedures. In the waiting room, the intake presentation plays on a continuous loop on a computer screen alternating between English, Spanish, and Creole. The intake presentation walks applicants step-by-step through LSGMI's eligibility requirements such as residency eligibility, immigration eligibility, income eligibility, and the type of legal issues LSGMI handles. Applicants can choose to watch the presentation while completing the form and this serves two primary functions: First, it helps applicants determine if they are eligible for services from LSGMI. Second, it helps applicants make self-referrals to the appropriate agency or group who can help them. LSGMI's referral forms are available in English, Spanish, and Creole.

After the intake presentation is complete, applicants either proceed to complete the intake screening form or request referral information from the intake paralegal for groups or agencies that can help them resolve their specific legal problems (e.g. if a applicant needs help in a criminal case, s/he would be referred to the Miami-Dade County Public Defender). When the intake screening form is completed, the applicant provides it to the intake paralegal who reviews the form and either provides the applicant with referral information or sends them to an LSGMI intake paralegal for a full intake interview if he or she has a problem within LSGMI priorities.
