South
Brooklyn Legal Services (SBLS) created the Foreclosure Prevention
Project (FPP) to provide outreach, education, and legal services
to low-income people who are at risk of losing their home to
foreclosure. SBLS does screening for intake through a foreclosure
hotline staffed by bilingual advocates. In addition to litigating
in state and federal court, SBLS helped to create a City-Wide
Foreclosure Prevention Task Force (FPTF) through which partner
agencies can make referrals as well as share information on
predatory lending.
The
Judicial Council of California, the policy-making body for the California
state courts, has adopted an Access Protocol to increase
access to justice for unrepresented litigants in the courts. A fundamental
piece of that protocol is that the courts will seek comment from
the legal services community before implementing any new initiatives,
to ensure there is not undue impact on access to justice.
The
Farm Worker Unit of Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) implemented
the Witness for Justice Project to educate volunteers about
the living and working conditions of migrant farm workers while
also supporting farm workers' rights to receive visitors in
employer owned labor camps. Witness for Justice was modeled
from the human rights Witness for Peace program and uses volunteer
observers to raise public consciousness of the poverty and hardship
faced by migrant farm workers.
The
Legal Services Corporation, together with the Hale and Dorr
Legal Services Clinic and the Bellows-Sacks Access to Civil
Legal Services Project at Harvard Law School, convened a Summit
on Performance Measures: Assessing Quality and Measuring Results.
Thirty-two people attended the summit, including program executive
directors, national leaders, funders, representatives of the
courts and several leaders of legal services in the United Kingdom.
Access the papers presented at the Summit as well as the agenda
and list of persons in attendance.

Spotlight
on Community Economic Development (CED)
-
How
are you supporting economic development efforts in your community?
The LSC Resource Library is looking for CED projects and strategies
that could be replicated by other legal services programs. In each
issue of eNews, we will identify an area that we feel would be beneficial
for research due to a lack of accessible information. We strongly
encourage you to make suggestions to us for future areas of inquiry.
