Abstract Number: 080006
January 2008
Iowa Legal Aid developed a Diversity Plan to serve their diverse staff and clients more efficiently. Iowa Legal Aid's Equal Opportunity Committee has annually evaluated aspects of the organization's efforts to recruit and retain a diverse staff, as well as how the program has served a client base that has become more diverse. The Diversity Plan discusses Iowa Legal Aid's diversity goals, which are: recruit, train, mentor, and retain the best qualified and diverse staff and volunteer support, in order to most effectively bring equal access to justice to the most diverse population of low-income and elderly Iowans possible. According to the Plan, diversity includes the following: age, color, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, national origin, race, religion, and sexual orientation. In addition, given the structure of Iowa Legal Aid's Board and the economic status of Iowa Legal Aid's clients, the Iowa Legal Aid Diversity Plan also focuses on diversity in economic terms and how to best utilize the diverse backgrounds and experiences of Iowa Legal Aid's Board and staff.
The Diversity Plan includes the following steps to ensure the progress of reaching its diversity goals:
