A Social Change and Leadership Program

Healing the Heart of Diversity® - 030021

Abstract Number: 030021

January 2003

Healing the Heart of Diversity® (HHD) is an innovative professional leadership development program and change process. HHD fosters a deeper understanding of diversity issues surrounding people from different backgrounds and perspectives including race, culture, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, gender, tradition and theology.

Healing the Heart of Diversity® programs are delivered in a number of formats, both as residential training programs and as customized in- house programs for organizations and communities. The programs range from 3-day residential retreats, to longer programs given in multiple series over a year. The organization also offers an Advanced program, and a Facilitator Leadership Development Program. This program trains and certifies individuals to deliver the Healing the Heart of Diversity methodology as a certified Healing the Heart of Diversity facilitator.

In the Basic Programs, fifteen to twenty-five individuals representing organizations, corporations and communities participate in a 3 day, transformative learning residency retreat. They experience the Healing the Heart of Diversity process and learn how it can apply to their organizations or communities. In the Advanced Program, participants attend a one to two week learning program. They master the art of diversity leadership and increase their ability to lead and manage in diverse environments. The end result demonstrates their efforts to achieve their goals and establish standards for their workplace and/or community In the Facilitator Leadership Development Program, individuals wishing to learn to be facilitators are trained and certified to deliver the Healing the Heart of Diversity methodology as a certified Healing the Heart of Diversity facilitator.

HHD was initiated in 1995 with seven national dialogues attended by diversity leaders from communities, organizations, school districts, and corporations. They identified what was needed in a program to help them to be more effective in their work. At the same time, they wanted support to move their local and national agendas for social change and inclusion forward. Based on the data gathered from these dialogues and the preliminary findings of the research and evaluation, a pilot for HHD was launched. The Center for Policy Development and Assessment (CAPD) has been the external evaluator for the program. It has received support from numerous foundations, including the Fetzer Institute, the Ford Foundation, and the David and Lucille Packard Foundation.
