Leadership and Diversity: The Link that Promotes Effective Delivery of Legal Services

To help grantees and other members of state justice communities achieve goals for expanding leadership and inclusion, LSC has produced a training resource designed for boards of legal services programs. The publication can be used as a stand-alone pedagogical device or as a component in a longer board meeting or orientation session. Entitled Leadership and Diversity: the Link that Promotes Effective Delivery of Legal Services, the module includes materials and resources that will help organizations both understand the very concrete rewards of diversity and how to manage diversity to the advantage of clients and the program.
The module was written by LSC staff, guided by an advisory committee of leaders invited by LSC to join in this effort. The committee included:

The module is divided into quarters. The first section addresses the concept of diversity' and includes Appreciating Differences in the Legal Services Community, Benefits from Managed Diversity in the Legal Services Organization, Ten Guidelines for Learning to Manage Diversity, and Obstacles to Managing Diversity.
The second focuses on Diversity Leadership in the Legal Services Organization and includes subsections on the Role and Responsibilities of Governing Body Members, Leadership Orientation is Key to Successful Participation of All Members of a Diverse Governing Body, Characteristics of Effective Leadership in Diversity Initiatives, Personal Commitment to Governing Body Members to Diversity, Dealing with Discomfort of Being a Different' Governing Body Member, and Responding to Diverse Opinions Within the Governing Body.
The third part explores The Link between Leadership and Diversity with subsections on Strategy for Managed Diversity: The Diversity Plan and the Preliminary Steps to Implementing a Diversity Plan.
In the fourth component, the module addresses Initiatives for Developing Your Organization's Diversity Plan and includes subsections on Strategic Initiatives for a Governing Body that Promote Diversity, Diversity in Compliance Activities, and diversity "Best Practices."
Each section of Leadership and Diversity: the Link that Promotes Effective Delivery of Legal Services includes a What You Should Learn checklist. The volume ends with suggestions for selecting and preparing a diversity facilitator/trainer.
