"Rural Pro Bono Delivery: A Guide to Pro Bono Legal Services in Rural Areas"

ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service and the Center for Pro Bono

Abstract Number: 30157

September 2003

The ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service and the ABA Center for Pro Bono created "Rural Pro Bono Delivery: A Guide to Pro Bono Legal Services in Rural Areas" for use by bar associations, pro bono programs, and rural legal services providers to strengthen pro bono service delivery to low-income people in rural areas. Recognizing that rural legal services providers face unique challenges in resource development, volunteer lawyer participation, and sheer distance between clients, this guide seeks to support the efforts of rural advocates in overcoming these barriers and improving delivery practices. This guide dedicates sections to barriers confronted by rural practitioners, lessons learned from rural pro bono delivery, successful and innovative practices in rural pro bono delivery, as well as information on additional resources that rural advocates may find helpful. In doing so, this guide provides rural practitioners with pragmatic approaches to begin to augment and improve pro bono service delivery to rural, low-income clients in need of legal assistance.
