Central American and Latino Communities Outreach Project
Neighborhood Legal Services Program - 030104
Abstract Number: 030104
January 2004
The Northwest Neighborhood Law Office (NLO-NW) of the Neighborhood Legal Services Program (NLSP) has increased its visibility within the Latino and Spanish speaking community through collaboration with the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN). CARECEN, a community-based organization, provides legal, housing, educational, health promotion and civic participation programs to the Central American and Latino communities.
As a result of conducting intake sessions at CARECEN, NLO-NW now receives referrals from CARECEN's multi-cultural and bilingual staff. Presently, NLO-NW provides its clients with informational materials about NLSP that are translated into Spanish, as well as numerous translated flyers, brochures, and pamphlets from various government and social service agencies. Current plans now include conducting monthly intake at one of CARECEN's locations. The coordinated efforts with CARECEN provide the foundation to enable NLO-NW to expand its current level of services. The CARECEN partnership, coupled with NLSP's goal of hiring a full-time Spanish-speaking receptionist, will help meet NLSP's ultimate objective of moving NLO-NW towards better serving a largely underserved Spanish-speaking community.
Since the implementation of the CARECEN project, NLSP has added a Latina staff attorney. She has initiated several activities to increase visibility including a Town Hall Meeting, contact with the U.S. Attorney, and distribution of flyers.
