"Ensuring Linguistic Access in Health Care Settings: Legal Rights and Responsibilities"
National Health Law Program - 040030
Abstract Number: 040030
April 2004
The National Health Law Program published "Ensuring Linguistic Access in Health Care Settings: Legal Rights and Responsibilities" to provide attorneys, health care providers, and others with information on how to ensure limited English proficient (LEP) clients can access appropriate healthcare services. In doing so, the National Health Law Program sought to provide the manual's users with information on issues surrounding language access as well as state and federal laws that inform legal and policy issues. The manual details information on recent demographic changes in the U.S. and discusses the need for greater linguistic access to health services for limited English proficient (LEP) clients. The manual also examines the role of accrediting agencies in working towards greater linguistic access as well as successful practices in the field. This manual is designed to increase understanding of the current status of language access and the legal protections that govern it. Baseline facts, checklists, and legal/policy recommendations are highlighted throughout.
The manual costs $65 for nonprofit advocacy organizations and $100 for for-profit companies, government agencies, and universities. To learn how to order this manual, follow the link below on the National Health Law Program's web site.
