Oregon Farm Mediation Program

Legal Aid Services of Oregon - 030117

Abstract Number:

June 2003030117

Legal Aid Services of Oregon has a great deal of success resolving employment disputes between migrant farm workers and their employers through the Farm Mediation Program run by the Oregon Department of Agriculture. LASO regularly offers to mediate disputes between growers and farm workers prior to filing suit. LASO's clients must agree to the process and while it is not always successful, in many cases it has resolved the problem quicker than litigation could have resolved the dispute. The mediation process allows each party to tell their story with a professional mediator facilitating the conversation. According to the Oregon Department of Agriculture, this mediation program has a stunning 91% settlement rate in employment disputes.
